Our Next Meeting will take place at the Studios of KJZZ Radio Station. 7pm October 30th. Located at Rio Salado Community College at 2323 W 14th Street in Tempe.  in Building B on the 4th floor.  We will receive a guided tour from Eric Scheter, Chief Engineer.

A Brief History of KJZZ

The station signed on February 22, 1951, broadcasting from the campus of Phoenix College in what is now the Maricopa County Community College District, as KFCA. It was Phoenix's first FM radio station, broadcasting with 10 watts on 88.5 MHz.[1][2] KFCA moved to 91.5 MHz in 1966. In 1971, KFCA joined NPR and was approved for a power increase to 100,000 watts from a new tower on South Mountain. On August 24, 1972, soon after signing on from its new, stronger tower, the station changed its calls to KMCR-FM for "Maricopa County Radio". In 1985, the call letters were changed to KJZZ to reflect the jazz musical programming featured by the station. Within a few years, the station was transferred to the umbrella of Rio Salado College, also in the Maricopa County Community College District, as part of a district reorganization. KJZZ was considered a good fit for Rio Salado College's mission; Rio Salado was conceived as a "campus without walls" and serves as the umbrella for all classes and other academic activities not specifically offered at one of the district's physical campuses.

Raffle Tickets will be sold for a chance to win a mini system courtesy of USATube Audio (see below).

I am pleased to report that our membership has now grown from 25 in January to 60 paid members. Welcome to everyone who has joined this year. Please send us any meeting suggestions you may have. 2020 is already looking very exciting. Andrew Jones of Elac and Charles B Kirmuss, CEO/Founder: Kirmuss & Associates are both scheduled to speak to our group.

Additionally for 2020 we plan 3 Special events along the lines of Speakerfest and DAC-it-Out. More on those later.

We are in the process of selecting new meeting venues. Some members have expressed wishes that meetings be held in a more central location. The Member Swap Meet will be at one of the new locations.

Regarding the Swap Meet, it will include members merchandise and be open to the public for purchases. Promotional activities will begin in the next 10 days. Please send a list of anything you plan  to sell along with the prices. We will be adding media to the mix as well so please plan to bring your LPs and CDs. An informal poll of the Steering Committee indicates there will be a lot of merchandise for sale just from the Steering Committee members. Although it is referred to as the November Meeting, it will actually be held on Saturday December 7th from 10am-3pm.

September Meeting Redux

Paul Rigello

For our September meeting, Ben Taylor gave a great presentation on recording live performances. Ben covered the various aspects of micing and shared how he mic’ed a performance by the Phoenix Chamber Music Society from our March club event. Ben also went into the different types of microphones and how they pick up sound. Finally, members were then invited to sit down at a mixing board and mix the various tracks Ben had recorded from the Chamber Society event. All in all, it was very informative and everyone had a great time. Bravo Ben!

Please be aware of the new website https://azavclub.com/ (not .org which is

the old site we are trying to eliminate). All events and dates are posted

there along with stereo equipment for sale. Send me details and pics of

anything you may want to sell. Free to members.

I want to apologize for the confusion on the date of the last club meeting.

Normally they are held on the last Wednesday of month unless that date is a

holiday weekend as it will be in August.

The music we listened to in the meeting is attached to this letter. There

were some good finds. Check it out on YouTube to see if you agree!

The August meeting (thanks to the hard work of fellow member Paul Righello)

will be held at the beautiful new 7,000 sq. ft. store just opened by

Acoustic Designs. Paul is in charge of this event and has been doing a great

job!  Don Loving, longtime Phoenix audiophile works there along with owner

Chris Mathews. They have been in home automation and lighting very

successfully for years. Don was brought on to run the two-channel Stereo

division.  They carry top lines: Esoteric, SAE, Chord, Focal, B&W, Sonus

Faber and others. The showroom is set up like a home with a kitchen open to

family room. To address the WAF, they offer floorstanding speakers on a

motorized platform that remain concealed in the wall unless in use. Cool!

The DAC Shootout this month will be from 11-3pm on Saturday August 24th at

Acoustic Designs, 16074 N. 78th St, Scottsdale  85260. Admission is $10 for

everyone including members. Starting in 2020 I hope to reduce the annual fee

to $35 and have $10 fees in place for the special events. Please RSVP this

event so we can schedule the sessions. We are very grateful that Acoustic

Design has agreed to host the August DAC event. We have a great assortment

of well renowned DACs from $1000-$6,500.

Format for DAC Event:

·        24 people at a time in a theatre room at the store.

·        You will listen to the same cut for two minutes on three

different DACs.

·        There will be two swaps to the other 7 DACs.

·        For each three you hear you will have a score card to judge

#1,#2, #3.

·        The 1st 24 people will be sequestered for about 30 minutes while

they listen and rate each one.

·        You will know which three DACs are in the group

·        You will NOT know which DAC is playing.

This will produce an overall rating for each product which will be shared

with all members.

August Meeting

Paul Rigello

The August event will be we DAC-It-Out which I have been organizing. If

anyone wants to help, let me know. The details are below:

The event will be held on Saturday August 24th at Acoustic Designs 16074 N.

78th Street, Suite B104, Scottsdale, AZ 85260

I am thinking the event will run from 11am to 3pm.

There will be a $10 door charge for non-club members. We might change this

to $15 to encourage presales of tickets for a solid headcount.

So far, we will have 10 DACs:

*    Schiit = will send Yggdrasil

*    Chord = Hugo TT from Acoustic Designs

*    Benchmark = will send DAC3

*    iFi Audio = local dealer will supply Pro iDSD

*    PS Audio = DirectStream DAC, Pete will supply.

*    Holo Audio = will send Spring DAC2

*    Jolida = will send Glass FX DAC and their FOZ unit (sound stage

enhancer for us to try out.)

*    NuPrime = will send Evolution DAC

*    L.K.S. DAC = MH-DA004, Curt will supply.

*    Line Magnetic = Jeff is buying one of these and would like to

include it; if it arrives on time.

This will allow us to do 3 brackets of 3 DACs each in a A/B/C format using

a few test tracks. The winners from each bracket will go to a finalist A/B/C

round. We can switch DACs via a coax cable or using 3 roon end points

playing the same track. Or, use a single source and a three-way optical

splitter. I plan to test each scenario before the event to see which works

best.

We will be using Acoustic Designs theater room, set up to seat around 20-25

people; thus we will shoot for multiple listening sessions to accommodate

everyone. Sign-ups upon entry. A Chord rep will be present to speak about

the Chord line.

Tom from Vinyl Valet will be present to represent iFi Audio and asks for a

table to share some materials about the brand.

The reference system will be kindly provided by Acoustic Designs and will

consist of Focal Maesto Utopia Evos, SAE amplification and either an SAE

preamp or Acoustic Research preamp.

If time permits, I would like to include a Hi Res. vs. Redbook, vs. 320kps

MP3 encoding demonstration using a couple of tracks.

We can use the winning DAC for this to showcase the differences between

digital formats. Might be interesting to do a with and without M Scaler demo

also.

I would like to do a FOZ Soundstage (Fosgate Design) expander demo as well

if there is time.

Finally, since this will run through lunchtime I’m going to see if we can

get a food truck to come out. Dining will be restricted to outside

consumption.

Best,

Paul
